While it's possible to zoom out from flow when this occurs, the disappearance of the flow leaves the screen blank which might give the inital impression that the flow has been lost.
I wonder if the mouse flick functionality contributes to this (even though it can be useful with a large flow). When flicking down quickly, it's easy to flick at a slight angle and send the flow off screen.
